24/7 Funeral Support Guide

When a death occurs, it can be overwhelming. We have prepared a simple three-step guide to help you navigate the first hours and days with clarity.
  • Call Us Immediately: Contact our 24/7 hotline or WhatsApp. A planner will advise you on what to do next and arrange for collection from the hospital or home.
  • Obtain a Doctor’s Pronouncement: Ensure that a medical professional formally confirms the death. This document will be required for registration and permits.
  • Secure the Body: Most families place their loved one in a mortuary for preservation. Be aware that public mortuaries often limit retention to about ten days and may charge fees beyond that.
  • Register the Death: Within 24 hours, register the death at the nearest civil registry or chief’s office. You will need the doctor’s pronouncement, the deceased’s ID number, and details of next of kin.
  • Apply for a Burial Permit: Under Kenyan law, a burial or disposal permit is required before interment. We help you secure this quickly.
  • Meet with Family and Faith Leaders: Bring together immediate family, elders and your religious leader to discuss funeral preferences and timing.
  • Plan the Logistics: Decide on the burial location (homestead, cemetery, or crematorium) and preferred dates. We coordinate vehicles, viewing arrangements and tent hire.
  • Notify the Community: Create a WhatsApp group or phone chain to update extended family and friends. We can help craft a clear message and shareable checklist.
  • Budget and Contributions: Begin the harambee (fundraising) process if needed. Use our downloadable budget template to track pledges and expenses.

Permits & Legal Requirements

Burial Permit

Kenyan law requires a permit before a body is buried or cremated. We handle the paperwork for you, submitting the doctor’s pronouncement and registering the death with the civil registrar.

Death Certificate

This official record is necessary for insurance, succession and other matters. We guide you through the application process and collect the certificate when issued.

Additional Documents (Diaspora Cases)

If death occurs abroad, additional documents are needed—identity and citizenship proof, an embalming certificate, transit and port health permits, and clearance at the point of entry into Kenya. Our team coordinates with embassies and the relevant ministries.

Mortuary Coordination

Liaison & Preparation

We liaise directly with hospital and mortuary staff to collect the body, arrange preservation and prepare for viewing. Christian and traditional communities often choose embalming so family and friends can view the body; Muslim families require washing and shrouding, with burial within 24 hours. We ensure that your customs are respected and that the necessary supplies (shrouds, washing implements) are ready.
