The Life and Legacy of Mwalimu Dickson Nyakundi Mokua

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Mwalimu Dickson Nyakundi Mokua Michieka, a revered retired Head Teacher, Church Elder, and community leader, who passed away on June 13, 2026, following a brave battle with metastatic prostate cancer.

Early Life and Education

Mwalimu Dickson Nyakundi Mokua was born in 1954 to the late Mzee Andrew Michieka and Bwari Kerubo. He began his academic journey at Riamoni Primary School in 1960, later completing his CPE at Kenyenya Primary School in 1972. He attended Nyambaria High School from 1973 to 1976, earning his E.A.C.E. Division II certificate. In 1989, he graduated as a P1 Teacher from Migori Teachers Training College (T.T.C.).

An Illustrious Career in Education Fondly known as “Mwalimu,” Dickson dedicated decades of his life to shaping generations of students within Kisii and Nyamira. His impactful teaching career included tenures at: Riamoni Secondary School (1979), Ekoro Primary School, Rirumi Primary School, and Kianyabao Primary School, Enchoro Primary School (Senior Teacher), Nyagachi Primary School (Deputy Head Teacher), and Esani Primary School (Promoted to Head Teacher in 2002, where he served until his retirement in 2015). Beyond the classroom, he served with distinction as the Chairman of the Zonal Examination Council and as a member of the District Continuous Assessment Test committee.

Faith and Spiritual Leadership

Elder Dickson Mokua was a steadfast pillar of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) faith. Baptized in 2000 at Nyamokono, he formally married his wife in 2002 and was ordained as a Deacon. He was later solemnly dedicated as a Church Elder by Pastor Keanche at the Riamoni Central SDA Church. He played an instrumental role in his local church community, serving as Church Clerk, Chairman of the Church Construction Committee, and Secretary of the Riamoni Camp Centre.

Community and Public Service

A true servant of the people, Mwalimu held numerous leadership roles in local development, including: * Chairman of the Kioute Welfare Association * Vice Chairman of Riamoni Secondary School Board * Board of Management (BOM) Member at Riooga Secondary School * Chairman of the Gesima Ward Bursary Fund

Family and Marriage

In 1977, Dickson married his beloved wife, Mary Kerubo Mokua. Together, they were blessed with a beautiful, sprawling family: Children: Evaline Nyamoita, Philis Bwari, Jeremiah Oteki, Joshiah Nyaribo, William Amwoma, Teresa Nyaboke, and Eunice Nyaboe. In-Laws: Jared Ochengo, Samwel Nyarondia, Dorca Kerubo, Linnet Kwamboka, Divinah Kemunto, and Geoffrey Okong’o. Grandchildren: Juspher, Bennadette, Patience, Faith, Jemima, Ezekiel, Michieka, Valerian, Sharon, Abigael, Precious, Prianah, Joshua, Shantel, Brandley, Deciderious, Destinee, and Sheilla. He was a beloved brother to John Atunga, Monicah Michieka, James Tachiri (USA), and the late Moraa, Robinson, Josephine, Nyaboke, and Edward.

Funeral Arrangements and Internment

The final journey and celebration of life for Elder Dickson Nyakundi Mokua will proceed as follows:

Thursday, 25th June 2026: The cortege left the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) Funeral Parlour at 1:00 PM for his home in Riamoni Sub-location, followed by an evening body viewing and overnight vigil.

Friday, 26th June 2026: The main funeral service and church service commenced at 9:30 AM at the funeral grounds, followed by his interment and procession to the graveyard at his home.
