Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Mzee Elijah Nyabayo Obara (1926 – 2026)

It is with deep sorrow yet profound gratitude for a long and beautifully lived life that we announce the peaceful transition of Mzee Elijah Nyabayo Obara, who passed away in 2026 after a blessed 100-year journey. He was a devoted family man, a pioneer of faith, and a hardworking pillar of the community.

Early Life and Background

Born in 1926, Mzee Elijah was the beloved son of the late Obara Kegencha and the late Elizabeth Nyang’ari’sa. He grew up in a large, loving family alongside many siblings: the late Stephene Kegencha, the late Askar Nyanchera, the late Kemuma, the late Moraa, the late Masese, Bogomba, the late Nyakwaakwa, Bonareri, Ondara, the late Osebe, the late Oeri, Nyatangi, and the late Nyaribo. In 1942, he completed his traditional initiation rites, marking his transition into adulthood.

Faith and Education

Mzee Elijah accepted the Christian faith at a young age, becoming one of the pioneer youth members of the Rokindo Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church at its inception. He later worshipped faithfully at Keore SDA Church and Riobara SDA Church, remaining a devoted member until his demise. He began his formal education in 1947 at Riokindo Primary School, sat for his Common Entrance (C.E.) Examination in 1951, and advanced his studies at Magena Intermediate School in 1952.

Career and Community Impact

In 1953, Mzee Elijah relocated to Nakuru, where he entered the building and construction industry, working alongside the late Alexander Michoti. Known for his exceptional hard work and construction skills, he secured employment with TMC Company. He left a lasting physical legacy in the region, proudly participating in the construction of the Kisii–Kilgoris Road and serving on the team that built the historic Ogembo Lodge between 1979 and 1984.

Family and Legacy

Mzee Elijah’s greatest joy was his family. In 1958, he married Osebe, and they were blessed with six children: Zacharia, Nyatangi, Kennedy, Grace, Jane, and Obare. In 1964, he married Nyaboke, and their union was blessed with eight children: Ruth, Sabina, the late Nyanchage, Samwel, Gesare, Pamela, Charles, and Rael. As a proud father of 14, his legacy continues to bloom through his 49 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish his wise counsel, warm smile, and enduring lessons on integrity and unity.

Funeral Arrangements

The final send-off for Mzee Elijah Nyabayo Obara was conducted with honor and dignity:

Thursday, 2nd July 2026: Family and friends assembled at Ram Morgue for prayers and viewing, followed by a procession from Ram Hospital to his residence in Randani Gesabakwa village, Kiru Sublocation, Bokimomge location for an overnight vigil.

Friday, 3rd July 2026: The funeral service and final interment took place at his home in Gesabakwa village, surrounded by his loving family, church representatives, and local community leaders.
