Obituary For Hezron Oigo Obegi

Celebrating the Life of Mzee Hezron Oigo Obegi (1950 – 2026)

It is with deep sorrow yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Mzee Hezron Oigo Obegi, who peacefully departed on May 25, 2026, at the age of 76. He was a beloved husband, father, community leader, and dedicated public servant.

Early Life, Education, and Cultural Roots

Born in 1950 to the late Obegi Nyanchage and Agnes Gesare, Hezron was raised in a humble, hardworking family where he absorbed the core values of integrity, resilience, and respect. In 1962, in strict accordance with Gusii cultural traditions, he underwent his traditional initiation, marking his proud transition into adulthood. He began his academic journey at Nyamesocho DOK Primary School, successfully sitting for his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) in 1969. Though financial constraints prevented him from pursuing formal secondary education, Hezron’s determination never wavered. He pursued practical training at a driving school in Kis Kisumu, a pivotal move that laid the foundation for his long, impactful career.

A Distinguished Career in Public Service

Mzee Hezron built an honorable career in public service after joining the Ministry of Co-operative Development. As a professional driver, his duties took him across various regions of Kenya, including Siaya, Kisumu, Kisii, and Trans Mara (Kilgoris). Through sheer hard work and discipline, he rose through the ranks, officially retiring in 2006 as a Senior Driver within the Ministry. Beyond his career, he was an accomplished farmer and entrepreneur in Ng’araro. He served his community selflessly in various leadership capacities, notably as the Chairman of the Bochi Borabu Committee and Chairman of Nyamesocho Polytechnic.

Marriage, Family, and Legacy

In 1973, Hezron married his lifelong companion, Mrs. Elmelda Kerubo Obegi. Their 53-year union was a beautiful testament to love, faith, and mutual respect. Together, they were blessed with seven children: The Late Ezekiel Mirieri Obegi, Jane Kemuma Obegi , John Nyanchage Obegi , The Late Mark Ombui Obegi , The Late Irene Nyansarora Obegi , Ruth Nyanturera Obegi , and Eunice Moraa Obegi.

He was also a doting grandfather, father-in-law to Wambui Mirieri, Caroline Wafula, Emma, Erick Anthony, and Dennis Areba, as well as a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Sickness and Final Journey

Mzee Hezron battled a long-term chronic illness with immense courage since 2009. His condition status became complex in early 2026, leading to admissions at Mbagathi Hospital, Nairobi West Hospital, and RAM Hospital. After a brief period of home-based care at his Emesa home, he was rushed to Bosongo Hospital for specialized treatment, where he sadly succumbed to complications related to type 1 diabetes mellitus on May 25, 2026. Up to his very last breath, “he died strong,” fighting with the quiet resilience that defined his entire life. Rest in eternal peace, Mzee Hezron Oigo Obegi. Your legacy lives on in our hearts.
