Mwalimu Joseph Mokaya Ogeto: A Legacy of Education and Leadership (1934 – 2026)
It is with profound sadness yet deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Mwalimu Joseph Mokaya Ogeto, who rested on March 31, 2026, at the age of 92. A resident of Motembe Village, Nyamira County, Mwalimu was a pillar of the community, a dedicated educator, and a devoted family man.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1934 in Motembe, Joseph was the last-born child of the late Zotel Ogeto and Ann Kerubo. His education journey was a testament to his resilience; after starting as a worker at Kapsuser Tea Estate, he pursued formal education as an adult. He attended Amasago D.O.K Primary School and later graduated from Asumbi Teachers College in 1959.
A Distinguished Career
Mwalimu Joseph’s teaching career spanned a remarkable 38 years, during which he shaped thousands of lives across the Gusii region. He served at numerous institutions, including:
- Kerera, Ibara, Bonyaiguba, Ngenyi, and Bigogo Primary Schools.
- Retired from Ekerubo D.O.K Primary in 1995.
- Long-serving KNUT Treasurer for Magombo Division.
- Chairman of Motembe Primary School and Board Member at St. Paul’s Nyachichi Secondary.
Family and Faith
Mwalimu was a devoted Christian, baptized at Nyabururu Catholic Church in 1954. He was the husband of the late Salome Kerubo Mokaya and Wilkister Nyaboke. He leaves behind a sprawling legacy of 15 children, including Charles Makori, Athanas Momanyi, Lawrence Mogusii, Festus Obongo, Alfred Nyabicha, Patrick Ombaye, Lillian Bironga, Petronilla Nyomenda, Charity Nancy, Lydia Kemuma, Cleophas Otwori, Lisper Ogake, Clive Obonyo, Lenah Kerubo, and Claver Ogeto. He was a proud grandfather to 60 and a great-grandfather to 23.
Final Journey
The funeral services were held on April 9th and 10th, 2026, with the final interment at his home in Motembe Village.
Mwalimu Joseph Mokaya Ogeto fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. His wisdom, discipline, and “Amaiga amange” (many greetings) will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Rest in Peace, Omogaka.
