Obituary For Richard Momanyi Nyamari Onchweri
Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Richard Momanyi Nyamari Onchweri (1945–2026)
It is with deep sorrow, yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the passing of Richard Momanyi Nyamari Onchweri, a distinguished civil servant, community pillar, and devoted family man. Richard passed away peacefully on Monday, March 30, 2026, at St. Catherine’s Mission Hospital, Keroka.
Early Life and Academic Journey Born in 1945 in Ibacho to the late Funice Mogaka and Nyantai Nyangau, Richard’s journey was defined by a quest for excellence. He began his education at Mobamba Primary School before proceeding to Bugema, Uganda, and later Nyanchwa High School. His academic foundation paved the way for a career dedicated to public service.
A Career of Service and Leadership Richard served the nation with distinction within the Ministry of Education in Kisii and Baringo, and notably at the Parliament Buildings in Nairobi. Upon his retirement from the Civil Service in 1994, he transitioned into successful small-scale farming and local leadership. His business acumen was vital to the KTDA Kiamokama Tea Factory, where he held several roles, and as a Director of the Ibacho Trading Company.
Faith and Community A man of unwavering faith, Richard was a cornerstone of the Moremani Catholic Church. Baptized in 1971, he served as the Chairman of the Catholic Men Association (CMA) and an Advisor at the Moremani Catholic Centre, leaving behind a legacy of spiritual leadership and integrity.
Family and Legacy Richard was the beloved husband of Francesca Mokeira, with whom he shared a union of 47 years. He was a guiding light to his four children—Geoffrey Nyangau, Caroline Nyangarisa, Charles Ombongi, and Alvin Mogotu—and a doting grandfather to eight grandchildren. He is remembered by his siblings Hudson, Zablon, Rose, and Jomo, as a man of principle who “stood on the rock that is higher than I.”
Funeral Arrangements A final celebration of his life was held on Friday, April 17, 2026, at his home in Moremani, Kiamokama, Kisii County, followed by a procession to his final resting place.
Rest in Eternal Peace, Richard Momanyi Nyamari Onchweri.
